JACARILLA

Jacarilla is a village in the Vega Baja region of the province of Alicante with a large expatriate community. It is surrounded by extensive fruit plantations of oranges, loquats, almonds, mandarins and lemons. Numerous walks and hiking trails cross and circumnavigate the plantations, which are interesting to explore.

JACARILLA BEACHES AND WALKS

Jacarilla is a 20 to 25 minute drive from the blue flag beaches of Guardamar del Segura and Torrevieja, which also have numerous restaurants, bars and beachfront cafes, as well as water sports.

There is a marina with 494 moorings at the mouth of the Segura River in Guardamar del Segura. Torrevieja has three marinas, namely Marina Internacional, Real Club Náutico and Marina Salinas.

The Palace of Jacarilla is a noteworthy attraction in the area. The manor house was built in the 1920s and is owned by the Marquis of Fontabla, who belonged to a family of noble landowners. Today, the mansion's 20,000 m2 of beautiful gardens with its entrance Puerta de los Leones, avenue of palm trees, several statues, artificial cave, grotto with the image of the Virgen de la Almudena and sundial attract many visitors.

The influence of the Marquises of Fontalba can also be seen in the parish church dedicated to Nuestra Señora de Belén, where a small seating area, rather like a royal box, was reserved only for the noble family when attending mass.

The town celebrates many festivals, such as the annual feast of Our Lady the Virgin of Bethlehem in September. On the first Sunday of January each year a raffle is held in honour of San Antón, where the winner receives a pig. There is a Pilgrimage to the Parque Cabezo de la Cruz outside the village on the same day.

The centre of the village has many typical Spanish shops, such as grocery shops, a bakery, butcher and even a small supermarket, the Hiperber Jacarilla. Every Friday there is a weekly market in Calle Alicante.

Jacarilla is 4.7 kilometres from the world famous Vistabella Golf Resort and 5.9 kilometres from the 18-hole La Finca Golf Resort.
