Rojales, in the Spanish province of Alicante, lies inland from the coastal area of Guardamar del Segura on the southern Costa Blanca. The Segura River runs through the centre of this beautiful area, famous for its traditional 19th century cave houses in the hills to the south of the town, such as the Casa de Las Conchas, whose interiors are decorated with mirrors, tiles and shells.

Interesting to note: The Azud stone dam, dating from the 16th century, is still used for irrigation, and Gasparito's underground wells were designed in the 1920s to collect rainwater. Today, East Well is operational, while West Well is an exhibition centre. They all give an insight into the history and heritage of Rojales.

The town has many residential urbanisations, comprising detached houses with gardens and swimming pools, which are also home to a notable expatriate population. Rojales is close to Torrevieja, Almoradí, Ciudad Quesada and Benijófar.

ROJALES BEACHES AND PROMENADE

Rojales is only 10 minutes from the sandy beaches of Guardamar and 15 minutes from the beaches of Torrevieja. Guardamar del Segura has over 12 kilometres of natural coastline, with sand dune beaches set against pine trees. The beaches start at the mouth of the Segura river, close to salt lakes and parks. Playa Centro Guardamar and Playa Moncayo have lively beach bars.

ROJALES LIFESTYLE

In the town centre, there is a town square, a local museum and a church. The locals celebrate several fiestas, including the annual festival of their patron saint San Pedro (St. Peter) on 29 June, as well as the Romeria de San Isidro (Pilgrimage to St. Isidore) in May and the Virgen del Rosario (Our Lady of the Rosary) in October.

The 18th century Carlos III bridge, with its fine stone arches, over the Segura river is the perfect place to enjoy a panoramic view of Rojales.

The town is a paradise for birdwatchers, outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers, as it is only a few kilometres from the natural park and lagoons of Torrevieja and La Mata. The lagoon waters, reed beds and marshes of the vast region are home to various migratory birds, particularly flamingos. The area has a large number of signposted trails for cycling and walking.

The Ciudad Quesada Aquapark is also only a five minute drive away.

Look out for the lunchtime set menu offered by most of the restaurants in Rojales.
